What is KITAS?

KITAS (Kartu Izin Tinggal Terbatas) is a Temporary Stay Permit card issued to foreign nationals legally residing in Indonesia for an extended period. It is distinct from a tourist visa and is required for any foreigner planning to work, invest, or reside in Indonesia long-term.

Types of KITAS

  • KITAS Kerja (Work KITAS) – For foreign workers employed by Indonesian companies.
  • KITAS Investor – For foreign investors holding shares in an Indonesian company (PT PMA).
  • KITAS Pensiun – For foreign retirees over 55 years of age.
  • KITAS Pasangan (Spouse/Family KITAS) – For spouses and dependents of KITAS holders.
  • KITAS Keagamaan – For religious workers.

Key Documents Required

While requirements vary by KITAS type, common documents include valid passport, sponsor letter, company documents (for work KITAS), health certificate, and recent photographs.

The Application Process

The application process begins with a VITAS (Limited Stay Visa) obtained from an Indonesian embassy abroad, followed by conversion to a KITAS upon arrival in Indonesia. The entire process must be carefully managed to avoid overstay penalties.

KITAS Validity and Renewal

KITAS is typically valid for 6 or 12 months and can be renewed annually, up to a maximum stay of 5 years, after which a KITAP (Permanent Residence Permit) may be applied for.
